It is in our own interest to ensure that we support and meet the requirements of recognised sustainable forestry practice, from the management of our own forests through the procurement of wood and fibre to the production process within our value chain. All our owned and leased forests (located in Russia and South Africa) are sustainably managed and 100% certified to Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC) standards
Wood is one of our primary raw materials, so we make sure our wood comes from sustainable, responsible sources. All the wood that we source is Chain-of-Custody certified either to FSC™ or PEFC™ standards (66% in 2015) or meets our company’s minimum requirement that complies with the standard for Controlled Wood (FSCSTD-40-005). We are not involved in illegal logging or deforestation.
Mondi is in a position to be able to enrich the economic and social conditions of the communities where we operate by creating wealth, employment and business and contributing to the socioeconomic health and stability of these communities. This is further supported by our corporate social investment (CSI) and our community engagement plans (CEPs). We engage with local communities as well as our employees and contractors on an ongoing basis with the aim of building sustainable, mutually beneficial relationships.
We recognise that many of our employees and contractors work in environments where hazards are ever-present and must be avoided. We believe that all incidents are preventable and that we must learn from experience. Our approach to safety and health management is underpinned by our desire to create a culture where responsibility for health and safety is shared. We ensure that all Mondi employees and contractors have the necessary safety awareness and skills training to recognise and avoid risk and at-risk behaviour. Training, auditing and the immediate correction of deficiencies are intrinsic to our safety culture.
We aim to minimise emissions to air and use water responsively, and we recycle, re-use or use our waste as a secondary fuel for energy generation. In 2015 we reduced our waste sent to landfill by 22% and reduced our contact water consumption by 5% against 2010 basis.
Given that energy generation significantly contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, our climate change programme is directed at increasing the efficient use of energy and intensifying our use of renewable energy. We have made significant energy-related investments to increase energy efficiency and lower carbon emissions. Our carbon emission reduction (per unit of saleable production) reached 28% in 2015 against a 2004 basis. We also replace fossil-based energy with renewable energy wherever practical. The share of renewable energy in the overall fuel consumption of our mills was 59% in 2015. Our electrical self-sufficiency reached 103% in 2015.
Our approach to product stewardship is based on the Life Cycle Initiative set out in the United Nations Environment Programme, which we signed back in 2009. It involves actively managing the environmental, safety and health impacts of products throughout their life cycles. Mondi being firmly committed to helping customers achieve their sustainability goals, we have developed the Green Range. It consists of smart packaging and paper solutions that are optimised to save natural resources and reduce waste and certified by internationally recognised bodies for their sustainability.
Mondi received several external recognitions for sustainable development achievements. These include reaching Advanced Level Reporter status under the United Nations Global Compact, being listed in the Carbon Disclosure Project’s (CDP’s) FTSE 350 Carbon Performance Leadership Index for the first time, and in CDP’s FTSE 350 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index for the third consecutive year, being member of the FTSE4Good UK, Europe and Global Indices for five years and being awarded by WWF two Environmental Paper Awards in the categories ‘Transparency’ and ‘Best Environmental Performance Paper Brands’.
Since 2010 we have invested around €68 million in social projects and community initiatives globally.
